Meditation Home

2023-04-06: I wrote this back in 2019-2020 and I was so cute! I'm still enthusiastic, and there are days I'd probably still come across like this, but damn.

I ❤️ Meditation! More accurately, I love the changes in my life that I believe are a result of meditation. It's not the only path to “happiness” but it might be the only one that allows you to be happy while living in reality.

It's a brain training technique. You sit comfortably and observe your breath. After a bit you'll notice that your mind has wandered and you're thinking about something that's not your breath. You let that thought go and return to watching your breath.

The important part is noticing and letting go. Watching your breath teaches your mind to focus on one thing. When you notice that your mind has wandered you're training your mind to pay attention, to notice when things change. Letting go teaches your mind acceptance and forgiveness.

It's amazingly simple but over time those skills start moving into the rest of your life.

A note about “meditation”: When I discuss meditation I'm including a bunch of, mostly, Buddhist philosophy because for me they're inseparable. I'm also specifically speaking about “mindfulness” related meditation.

You don't have to believe in reincarnation or karma to recognize that 2500+ years ago a guy in India saw some basic realities of the human condition and came up with a set of teachings that has put countless others on the path to something better.

Many others have recognized those same basic truths about human nature but AFAIK no one else left us instructions for getting out of the ruts that our animal brains dig for us.
